Daily use:
In addition to the initial flurry of informational posts, we have added links for the pages that answer frequently asked questions at the desk, such as the staff directory, the list of circulating equipment, the online databases, our home-grown online DVD browser, and the Library home page. We are continuing to add links and uploads to commonly used forms, official policies, procedures manuals, and other useful on-the-job information.
Record of communication:
For staff, posting announcements has been one of the most useful aspects of the blog to date. Having an archive of past postings has been a plus over the old whiteboard, with students and staff able to search for something they remember reading but have forgotten the detail. Students or staff who have been away from work for a while can use the categories to find out what they've missed.
Personal aspects:
Students regularly read and discuss the blog among themselves. When it first appeared, we had to continually remind students to check it; some are now checking it themselves and using it for referral as well. Others still need reminders. Most seem to be more interested in using it now that a few students have posted humorous or personal messages; our usual litany of procedural tidbits leaves it a bit dry and boring, and when working with young adults who are graphics-oriented, it has helped to spice up the content, which they do nicely without assistance from staff.
Getting feedback:
While we intended to make it mostly an informational tool about changes at work, the blog provides an even better means of allowing students and staff to express their ideas, suggestions, and opinions, whenever they wish, without feeling intimidated. Students are comfortable with using Internet tools for communication, and during "down time" on the public desk, they can easily access the blog and respond to postings, or post questions of their own.
